The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) women’s basketball team were crowned the inaugural North Coast Section (NCS) Open Division champions after defeating Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa, 67-58, Friday, Feb. 28.
On Saturday, June 1, members of Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School’s Class of 2019 tossed their caps to the heavens to celebrate their graduation. Alameda Science & Technology Institute (ASTI) celebrated its graduation a day earlier. Then, on Thursday, June 6, members of the Class of 2019 at the Adult School and Island High graduated. The celebrations continued the following day for graduates at Alameda and Encinal high schools. The Alameda Sun congratulates all the graduates and will publish their names in an upcoming edition.

St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) athletes Cooper Teare and Kiera Marshall swept the individual championships at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Div. V state cross country meet last Saturday, Nov. 28.
The 5K, or 5,000-meter, course took runners through Woodward Park in Fresno. There were five races each in both the men’s and women’s divisions.
Teare, a senior, beat out 200 other participants in the men’s Div. V race, while Marshall finished before 203 other cross-country athletes.
The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) men’s basketball team capped off its 2015-2016 season with a 55-50 victory over St. Bernard of Playa del Rey in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Div. V. title game.
The Pilots won the back-and-forth tilt with a total team effort, including crucial made free throws from an unlikely source. SJND came out the gates firing from downtown. The Pilots scored 12 of its 14 first-quarter points off of four 3-pointers. The team would go on to make six 3-pointers. The Pilots held a slim 14-13 lead after the first quarter.

High school track season canceled mid-stride to prevent spread of disease
The COVID-19 virus has forced the high school spring sports season to go on an indefinite hiatus. Before the mandate was announced the St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) track & field team competed in the Dan Gabor Invitational on Saturday, March 7, at Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton.
Before the high school winter postseason was canceled, the St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) women’s basketball team played its final game of the season in the NorCal Open Division title game. The Pilots wound up on the losing end, 69-53, to their nemesis Archbishop Mitty of San Jose on March 10 at Miramonte High in Orinda.
St. Joseph Notre Dame High School (SJND) alum Cooper Teare was a member of a four-person relay team that broke a 12-year National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) record last weekend at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
Teare and the University of Oregon (UO) track-and-field team traveled across the country to compete in the three-day invitational at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the University of Arkansas campus from Friday, Jan. 31, to Sunday, Feb. 2.
Perez, Annis shine on St. Joseph Notre Dame High School’s track team
Two St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) track-and-field athletes won two individual races at the second Bay County League-East (BCL-E) meet of the season on March 5 at Chabot College in Hayward.
Senior Emily Perez won the women’s 1,600- and 3,200-meter races, while junior Zavier Annis won the men’s 100- and 200-meter races.
