The California Federation of Republican Women has announced applications are now open for a scholarship in honor of President Ronald Reagan.

The annual scholarship of $2,000 is being offered to an undergraduate registered Republican woman who is majoring in political science, communications, or directed toward law.

The applicant must be a United States citizen who has completed two years of college. The applicant must also be a resident of the State of California. Deadline to apply is Aug. 15.

Girls Inc. Announces Scholarship Winners
Alameda High School (AHS) junior Luna Cristales recently received a $5,000 Girls Inc. national college scholarship. National scholars are outstanding young women selected for exemplifying the Girls Inc. mission of inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold. This year, the Girls Inc. national organization awarded 28 high school girls scholarships for educational expenses at any accredited college or university. Cristales is the seventh national scholar at Girls Inc. of the Island City.

Alameda resident and Bishop O’ Dowd student Andrew Melendez signed his letter of intent Wednesday, Feb. 5 to become a member of the Santa Clara University cross-country team next fall.

Melendez was a member of the Bishop O’ Dowd cross-country team. Melendez finished in 30th place at the California Intercollegiate Federation Div. III cross-country championships at Woodward Park in Fresno with a time of 16:04 on Nov. 30, 2013.

The senior led the Dragons to a ninth place finish in the Div. III 5k race.
