Jay-walkers got a nasty surprise when Alameda police set up a crosswalk sting in late June. Some 168 citations were issued to pedestrians who disobeyed traffic laws to jaywalk. About 80 percent of the citations were for pedestrians; however, drivers were also ticketed for distracted driving and speeding.
The City of Alameda Democratic Club will host a talk by Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan at Alameda Hospital, Conference Room A, 2070 Clinton Ave.
Chan will discuss the county’s "New War on Poverty," and cover the effect the latest recession on state and federal budgets has had on the community. The event is scheduled from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 8; it is free and open to the public.
