Last month’s event “March for Meals” recognized federal legislation signed in March 1972 that helped create Meals on Wheels America programs nationwide. Alameda Meals on Wheels began in 1973 and has served hot, nourishing meals to homebound Alameda residents 365 days a year ever since.
Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft visited Love Elementary School recently to be interviewed for the Little Minds, Big Talks podcast.
Comandante Mauro DiGregorio, the commander of the Varazze Local Police, was Alameda’s guest at the Alameda Fourth of July Parade. Comandate is the equivalent of Varazze’s Chief of Police.
City leaders held a ceremony to proclaim June 30, Jane Chisaki Day in Alameda. Chisaki worked for the city’s library department since 1984 in a variety of roles including the position of Library Director, which she has held since 2006. Chisaki recently announced her retirement.
Islands need bridges
As an island, Alameda relies on four bridges and an underwater tunnel, the Tube, for access to and from the island. On Sunday, Feb. 19, half of our bridges were out of commission following a PG&E-caused power outage.

Thank you, Alameda for re-electing me to be your mayor another four years. It has been my honor and privilege to serve this special community these past four years, working with City Council and city staff to support our residents and businesses, including during the height of the pandemic.

The population of people experiencing homelessness in the City of Alameda increased by more than 14% since 2019, according to a preview of the Alameda County “Point in Time” (PIT) count report released Monday, May 16.
