Last Thursday, convicted bank robber Amanuel Moreno, 21, stood before U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in a federal courtroom in Oakland. He listened as Rogers sentenced him to five years and 10 months in federal prison. One of the charges that led to the sentence stemmed from Moreno’s failed robbery attempt at the Chase Bank at South Shore Center on Dec. 6, 2012. All told, Moreno’s charges included five bank robberies and two attempted bank robberies.
A 32-year-old Alameda resident was arrested in San Jose after leading California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers on a high-speed chase on state Route 85 Tuesday night, Jan. 28, which ended when the man crashed the vehicle into a home then tried to flee on foot.
Evan Alexander Page was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle, possession of stolen property and felony evading, the CHP said.

Chantha Koug, 24, of Oakland and an accomplice allegedly used the Island City as a springboard to commit a burglary in Koug’s hometown.
Alameda Police Department (APD) officers were investigating the report of a stolen car on Fernside Boulevard on Tuesday, Jan. 28; at about the same time members of the Oakland Police Department (OPD) were alerted to a burglary in progress on the 2400 block of 12th Avenue in their city.
Alameda Police Department (APD) detectives are investigating five commercial burglaries that APD believes may have been committed by the same person, an APD spokesman said.
The break-ins took place Sunday, Jan. 26 at La Penca Azul, 1440 Park St.; Papa Murphy’s and the Island Cafe, which share a location at 1929 Broadway; and Alameda Entertainment Associates, 2301 Central Ave. Similar burglaries were reported Jan. 22 at the Sidestreet Pho restaurant, 2304 Encinal Ave., and the Parrot AT&T store at 2601 Blanding Ave.

A 25-year-old Alameda man died early Tuesday, Jan. 28, from gunshot wounds suffered the previous night at a drugstore parking lot in Oakland, police said.
The shooting occurred around 9:06 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27 in the parking lot of the Walgreen’s store at 3434 High St., police said. Officers found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the face. His name is being withheld pending notification of relatives. The victim was unresponsive when police arrived on the scene. He was taken to Highland Hospital where he died at 1:35 a.m., Tuesday.
