Rob was born in San Francisco and graduated from Sacred Heart. He was a U. S. Navy veteran. He died peacefully after a short bout with cancer.

LCDR Norman “Skip” Eltringham passed away in Alameda on Jan. 27, 2014, after a battle with cancer. Skip was born in New London, Conn. He was the beloved husband of Edna Eltringham and father of Christopher, Gregory and Timothy. Skip retired as a Lieutenant Commander after 30 years of distinguished service in the U.S. Navy. He was assigned on USS Skate in the deployment to the Arctic Ocean. He also served submarine tours of duty on USS Darter, USS Tigrone and USS George Bancroft. Surface sea duty tours included USS George Josephus Daniels and USS Samuel Gompers. He served shore tours in Dam Neck, Va.; Cape Canaveral, Fla.; Subic Bay, Philippines; Charleston, S.C.; and at the Military Sealift Command, Pacific; and Sea Systems Command. Following his retirement from the navy, Skip embarked on a career in the U.S. Merchant Marine beginning in 1993. He worked on deep sea vessels with Military Sealift Command (MSC). After three years with MSC he worked as a relief captain for the Marine Science Institute. He also worked as a relief captain on the oil spill response vessel, Pacific Responder, and was the lead captain on the former Presidential Yacht Potomac. He was also a member of the volunteer crew of the SS Jeremiah O’Brien (Second Mate). Skip held a U.S. Coast Guard license as Master 1600 Gross Tons Oceans and Second Mate AGT Oceans. He was a graduate of Rollins College, Winter Park, Fla. with a B.S. degree in Business and Economics. Family and Friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 7, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Basilica, 1109 Chestnut St., Alameda.
