Maureen Janet Berls Weaver
Maureen Weaver passed peacefully at home on June 19, 2018, after a courageous five-year battle with ovarian cancer. Maureen was born on Oct. 5, 1939, in Selden, Kan., to the late Edward (Ted) and Eulalia Pauls Berls. She was also preceded in death by her sister Patricia Berls Bacon.
Maureen graduated high school in Oberlin, Kan., in 1957. She studied one year at Marymount College in Salina, Kan., before attending Kansas State University from 1958 to 1961, graduating with a Bachelor’s in English and a minor in Spanish. While attending K-State she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority.
Maureen moved to Denver and taught school at Kunsmiller Junior High School. She married Malcolm Weaver on Aug. 5, 1967. They moved to the Bay Area in 1969, and lived in Tiburon and, eventually, Alameda.
Maureen taught English and Spanish at Bret Harte Junior High School in Oakland for many years, before purchasing the Travel Shoppe in Alameda in 1979. She spent the next 39 years building a highly respected business booking travel, counseling clients on vacations, honeymoons and company travel.
She served on the board of the Willows and also the Boys and Girls Club in Alameda.
Maureen’s passions included being an Oakland Raider fan, cooking, golf, playing bridge, getting together with friends and clients and of course, traveling.
Maureen is survived by her husband Malcolm, stepchildren: Joel, John, Bruce (Brenda) Weaver and Lisa (Philip) Gosselin, sisters Marlene (Duane) Weigel, Hays, Kan., Jan Berls, Indiana, Pa., Cynthia Berls, Alameda and brother Gerald (Maria) Berls, of Ellis, Kan. She will also be missed by many step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and friends.
