Hugh Fisher Rubinow

Oct. 5, 1916 - Jan. 15, 2014
Resident of Oakland

Hugh was born Oct. 5, 1916, in Newark, N.J. to Sydney G. and Ruth Fisher Rubinow. His family lived in various places before moving in 1930 to Berkeley, where he lived for the next 80 years. The final two years of his life were spent at Salem Lutheran Home in Oakland. He had a long career: he owned a construction business, worked at the Kaiser Richmond shipyards during World War II and designed piping systems for naval yards and chemical refineries.

He retired from Stauffer Chemical in Martinez. Hugh was a physically fit person who lived with zest. He loved golf, flying small planes, arguing politics and telling stories. He fondly remembered all the pets who shared his life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Boyer Rubinow, and brother, Sydney G. Rubinow. He is survived by daughter, Kathleen Hodges and son-in-law, John Hodges of Boise, Idaho; and grandson, Olaf Faaland, Olaf’s wife, Pam Falvo Faaland, and their children, Stefan and Sophia of Alameda. No memorial service is planned. Contributions in Hugh’s memory may be made to the Humane Society, the SPCA, or the charity of your choice.
