Gary R. Schmidt
Gary R. Schmidt, 72, died Dec. 11, 2014, with his loving family by his side in Alameda.
Gary was born July 14, 1942, in Alameda, and lived here his entire life. He graduated from Encinal High School in 1960.
Gary was the epitome of an entrepreneur, enjoying the excitement and challenge of different industries; a successful olive oil rancher, a self-taught craftsman and builder and a property owner and landlord. He took great pride in his business ventures, tirelessly working to ensure their success.
Gary and his wife, Lillian, were an inseparable pair. They lived their lives to the fullest. From sweet and sunny, casual days spent on the beach of the Russian River with their grandchildren to lovely, carefree, never ending lunch dates enjoying fine wines and great food in San Francisco. Traveling to near and far away destinations for a festive play on Broadway, a down-to-earth expedition to Alaska, or a fantastic journey to Peru. Or, getting their hands dirty while tending to their olive oil ranch and various properties. During their 48 years of marriage, there was never a dull moment. Working hard, and playing even harder was the mantra they lived by.
Gary also enjoyed hunting waterfowl and upland game in the Central Valley, and in earlier years, skiing the Sierra Nevada mountain resorts with his two daughters.
Gary is survived by Lillian, his two daughters, Jennifer and Jamie, their spouses and four grandchildren. Gary will always be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather who provided the utmost for his family.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, Holly Street and Mecartney Road, Bay Farm Island, Alameda at 11 a.m., today, Thursday, Dec. 18. Private interment will be held at the Glenn County Willows Cemetery the following day.
