Elizabeth ‘Bette’ Marie Owens

Bette passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Alameda.

She was born in Gloucester, Mass., grew up in Quincy, Mass., and graduated from Quincy High School in 1940. Bette married William John "Jack" Owens on July 14, 1945, and they celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary last summer. Bette worked at the Granite Trust Company in Quincy prior to her marriage and then became a homemaker. The couple lived in Hingham, Mass., for 48 years, where they were parishioners of Saint John the Evangelist Episcopal Church. Bette was also a member of the Hingham Historical Society.

In 2000 Bette and Jack moved to Alameda, to be closer to their daughter and two granddaughters. In Alameda they joined Christ Episcopal Church and also became members of Trinity Seniors at Trinity Lutheran Church. Bette enjoyed sewing, stenciling, baking desserts and, most of all, being with her granddaughters.

Bette is survived by her husband Jack Owens, her son Malcolm Owens of Castro Valley, her daughter Meredith Owens and her two granddaughters Anna Tai Owens and Mei Liu Owens, all of Alameda.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial service on Saturday Nov. 22, at 1 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 1700 Santa Clara Ave. in Alameda. There will be a gathering in the church social hall after the service.

Donations may be made in her memory to Bay Area Adoption Services in Mountain View, or Half the Sky Foundation in Berkeley.
