Karen Louise Eikeland
Karen Louise Eikeland was born Feb. 19, 1944, to Mary Margaret Gray and Lars Eikeland. Karen was a lifelong Alameda resident. She passed away May 3, 2019.
A professional photographer par excellence, she graduated Laney College with an associate’s degree in art.
Well known and loved for her playful, bubbly, joyful personality, Karen was a superb nature photographer. Her outstanding work appeared in several magazines and galleries.
Karen was the photographer at the Altarena Playhouse. She served as a dedicated photo lab technician at Alameda One Hour Photo until it closed in the early 2000s. Prior to that, she served as a retoucher and lab tech for Romaine Photography in San Francisco. Karen also belonged to Alameda Photographic Society.
A lifelong devout Catholic, she was a parishioner at St. Joseph and previously at St. Phillip Neri, both in Alameda.
Karen died of medical complications after being hospitalized several weeks at Fairmont and subsequently at Alameda Hospital. Her death comes as a shock to her loved ones.
Karen had no children, but is survived by brother William Eikeland, as well as other family members who love her dearly and profoundly feel this great loss.
Walk along the beach in Alameda, down by the bird sanctuary, and maybe you’ll feel her spirit out there, shooting close-ups of the herons and sandpipers in the sunshine.
The funeral will take place at Saturday, June 22, at 9:30 a.m. at St Joseph Basilica, 1109 Chestnut St. Friends of Karen’s are asked to contact her cousin Linda for more funeral information at email@example.com.
