Carla F (Stapel) McGrogan
On Dec. 30, 2018, sadly for many, Carla F (Stapel) McGrogan, 89, left this world.
“Her pain is gone and she is now at peace. She is the woman I have loved for more than 70 years and will always love,” said her beloved husband, Jim.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends and will be forever loved.
Carla was born in Oakland and raised in Alameda. After graduating from Alameda High School, she briefly attended UC Berkeley prior to joining the working world. During those early years of work, she met her husband to be, Jim, at the Loyalty Group Insurance Company of Oakland.
After Carla and Jim married, they had two daughters. In addition to raising a family, Carla worked in a variety of positions outside the home. This included dance instructor as she had taken many years of ballet training throughout her childhood and young adulthood. She also worked as an elementary school cook and later an aide to Special Education students in the Hayward Unified School District and an office manager in chiropractic offices. After graduating from Chabot College with honors, she went on to work as a director of a Fremont-based adult daycare program.
Over her lifetime Carla also participated in a variety of volunteer organizations including serving as: a Sergeant in the Hayward Auxiliary Police Reserves, a docent at the Alameda Museum and as President and Vice President of the Adelphian Club, an Alameda philanthropic group. Carla didn’t let age get in her way of learning new things and in her 70s she trained and became certified to be a Community Emergency Response Team member. She was also a member of the Friends of the Alameda Library and the Native Daughters of the Golden West.
In addition to raising a family, working and volunteering, Carla was also a great seamstress. She did wonderful crochet and knitting work, loved doing crossword puzzles, was an avid reader and was always interested to hear how her family members and friends were doing.
Carla was preceded in death by her parents Ruth and Carl Stapel, her daughter Donna McGrogan and her grandson Brendan Keck.
In addition to her husband Jim McGrogan, Carla is survived by her brother, Edward Stapel (Doris); daughter, Jayne (Bill Keck); grandchildren: Paul DeBone (Alvita), Zachary and Mackenzie Keck; great-grandchildren, Antoine and Arianna; brother-in-law, Stephen McGrogan (Jean); nephews: Edward (Michol) and James (Aurora) Stapel, David (fiancé Alexandria) and Peter McGrogan and grand-nephew Miles Stapel.
At Carla’s request, no services will be held. Donations in Carla’s memory are requested to: Midway Shelter care of Alameda Homeless Network at midwayshelter.org; Twin Towers United Method Church in Alameda or to a charity of choice.
