On Wednesday, July 22, the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) Board of Education voted to appoint Gray Harris to the seat left empty when Niel Tam passed away on May 24.

Harris taught elementary school for six years in Alameda and served as president of the Alameda Education Association, the union that represents Alameda teachers. Harris was one of five candidates who applied for Tam’s seat. Hazel Lau, Michael McMahon, Anne McKereghan and Dorota Sawicka also applied for the position.

Spread out over the Island this past weekend both well-established and brand-new events were held. Besides the well known Park Street Art & Wine Faire and Alameda Fire Department (AFD) Pancake Breakfast, the new Stargell Plaza was dedicated on the West End, and the Bay Area Radio Museum hosted Radio Day.

An Oakland native was found guilty of six charges including first-degree murder last Friday, July 17, at the Alameda County Courthouse in Oakland, for the shooting of an Alameda man at a Walmart in Oakland.

The Alameda Police Department (APD) announced it has taken the measure of temporarily increasing its staffing levels at night in an attempt to halt criminal activity, last Friday, July 17.

APD said the city has experienced a slight increase in residential burglaries on the West End. The majority of the increase in criminal activity has occurred between 7 p.m. and midnight, according to police.

APD is also seeking residents help in solving a recent residential burglary. If you can identify the suspect pictured, APD asks that you contact Sgt. David Pascoe at 337-8374.
