Island Yacht Club’s annual Northern California Women’s Sailing Seminar, now in its 23rd year, is all about women teaching women how to sail. This fun, relaxing, educational and inspiring weekend is the only one of its kind. Top-notch women sailors from all along the Pacific Coast volunteer their expertise to provide instruction in workshops that occur in the classroom and on-the-water. Local sponsors donate exciting and valuable items for the seminar’s lunchtime and cocktail hour raffle on Saturday.
Fundraiser concert at Rhythmix fetes women winemakers, too, next Saturday
Now in its second year celebrating the work of women winemakers, artists, and musicians, Wine Women and Song returns this month to Rhythmix Cultural Works (RCW) Saturday, Aug. 22. All proceeds contribute to free cultural arts education programs to underserved youth in Alameda and Oakland.
More than $181 million in cocaine largest haul in history
On July 18 the crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Stratton, whose home port is Coast Guard Island, seized a self-propelled semi-submersible vessel carrying more than 16,000 pounds of cocaine — 275 bales worth more than $181 million wholesale. The crew also apprehended four suspected smugglers. A U.S. Navy maritime patrol aircraft detected the 40-foot vessel in the Pacific Ocean more than 200-miles south of Mexico.
