The Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) has announced that nearly two dozen candidates have applied for Mayor Trish Spencer’s seat on the school board. Because it has so many applicants to review, the school board will hold two special meetings to interview candidates and listen to public comments.
The first meeting will be held 6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 22, in the gymnasium at Island High School, 1900 Third Street. The board will listen to personal statements from the candidates and public comment, and then select the top candidates for the position.
An armed man fled an Alameda Wells Fargo Bank with an undisclosed amount of cash after he robbed the bank on New Year’s Eve.
Police arrived at the bank, located at 2260 Otis Drive near South Shore Center, at 10:35 a.m., according to Alameda Police Department (APD) Chief Paul Rolleri.
None of the seven individuals inside were harmed during the robbery, mostly because it was a quiet operation. Police say the suspect entered the facility, walked up to a teller, pulled out a gun and demanded money, without making much of a scene.
Civil rights icon Ruby Bridges will speak at the concert at Kofman Auditorium Jan. 24.
