The governing board of the Peralta Community College District will hold a public hearing on the proposed budget of the district for the year ending June 30, 2018, prior to final adoption as required by the California Code of Regulations, Title 5 Section 58301.
An Alameda woman was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a Hayward man last month.
Valarie Boden, 26, of Alameda was arrested for the slaying of 30-year-old Daniel Deltoro. Boden was arrested by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office along with 25-year-old Pablo Mendoza and 26-year-old Brandon Follings. Both men are Hayward residents.
By chance, someone asked me last Tuesday evening, “Why do people hate Jews?”
The person asking was Bill Schwartz of San Francisco; he is Jewish. Although I am proud to say that I belong to Temple Israel of Alameda, I am not by definition Jewish yet I have studied the Torah at the Temple for the past two years.
My response to Bill was, “People sometimes hate successful cultures, perhaps it is cognitive dissonance or envy dressed up as self-righteousness.”
Alamedans gather at City Hall last Sunday, Aug. 13, to protest the violence at the Charlottesville, Va., white nationalist rally the previous day. Three people lost their lives at Charlottesville: Heather Heyer in what most consider an act of terrorism and Virginia State Troopers H. Jay Cullen and Berke Bates in a helicopter accident while performing surveillance of the rally.
Laura Fanning organized the Alameda protest, which more than 100 people attended, including Vice-Mayor Malia Vella and Councilmember Jim Oddie.
Renters gather as fight for rent control continues
Alameda tenants and their allies gathered at City Hall last Saturday, Aug. 12, for a rally and press conference. The tenants are speaking out against a charter amendment petition currently circulating around the city.
The tenants wish to protect the just-cause-eviction protections that the City Council wrote into Ordinance 3140 in May.
