The Alameda Fire Department and the city’s Public Works Department are hosting an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Fire Station No. 3 and the adjoining Emergency Operations Center at 1625 Buena Vista Ave. and 1809 Grand St. this Saturday, Dec. 2. The public is invited to join Alameda’s new fire chief, Edmond Rodriguez, on a walk through the facilities. Light refreshments will be served.

Paul Douglas Scherer of Alameda died Sunday when the minivan he was driving plunged into the Oakland Estuary. Witnesses called 911 about 8:30 a.m. to report that they saw a white minivan go into the estuary off Derby Avenue in Oakland, across from the Bridgeside Shopping Center.

“It’s a dead-end street that stops at the estuary,” Oakland Fire Department (OFD) Battalion Chief Nick Luby said. “The vehicle drove down the street and ended up in the estuary.”

Many people in Alameda know that I was born and raised here. I attended local schools and my parents have been active members in this community for more than 50 years. In April, I will begin my 26th year as a member of the Alameda Police Department (APD). It is a tremendous honor and privilege to be the Chief of Police in the city where I was born. I am committed to doing everything I can to make Alameda, my hometown, as safe as possible.

The underground infrastructure at Alameda Point may be old and in need of replacement, but many of the Navy’s industrial and civic buildings were built to last centuries. One of those buildings is Building 9, a former records warehouse on West Tower Avenue right across the street from the Bladium that is rock solid and worth rehabiltating.

Some 250 local residents gathered at the Alameda Elks Lodge on Veterans Day last Saturday to honor veterans and active-duty military stationed in the area. The lodge itself boasts 126 members who are veterans. The Elks’ veterans served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the current Middle East conflicts.
