Youth Soccer Team Won Tourney in Fremont
The Alameda Soccer Club (ASC) Islanders 2006 Girls team won the Kick-or-Treat Tournament hosted by the Fremont Youth Soccer Club on Oct. 27 and 28.
The Islanders dominated their age group by going a perfect 4-0 in the tournament and allowing just one goal in the final 90 seconds of tournament play. On Oct. 27, the team defeated the Montclair Clippers 1-0 and the San Ramon Football Club 3-0. The next day they beat the Hayward Youth Soccer League 3-0 and the Albany-Berkeley Lightning Flash 2-1.
The team showcased their defense skills with an impressive defensive stand led by Kate Sikora, defensive midfielder; Sophie Moser, right defender; Josie Farris, left defender; Kate Burgess, center defender; Dani Petersen, center defender; and four shutout halves by Soren Firestone as goalie. Sarah Grace Powell, striker, led the attack with four goals and three assists over the two-day tournament.
Ivy Ausmus, wing forward, scored two goals, while Gracie Martin, wing forward; Zuni Zapeta-Huggans, attacking midfielder; and Sikora each scored a goal. Two of Powell’s goals came off of direct free kicks. Martin’s goal was the most impressive of the tournament, as it was a powerful one-touch finish off of a long cross from Powell. Martin’s goal was in the final game.
Hana Thomas, attacking midfielder; Jaena Freeman, striker; Maddie Sanchez, wing forward; Ruby Rawski, wing and midfielder; and Savanna Stollman, attacking midfielder all made important contributions controlling the mid-field or forward attack with their give-and-goes, overlaps, steals, switches and through-passes.
The tournament win was another example of the turnaround the squad made this season. The team began the season with a shaky 0-4 tournament performance in August.
The Islanders 2009 Girls Blue team won bronze medals at the Kick-or-Treat tournament, while the 2009 Girls Red team won second place at the Santa Cruz Breakers Halloween Cup.
