X-Country Hornets Win

The Alameda High School (AHS) women’s cross country team won the West Alameda County Conference (WACC) Cross Country Championship meet Nov. 9 at Hayward High School.

The squad fought back competition from eight other schools to win the championship. They were led by four athletes that finished in the top nine out of 60 total participants. 

AHS junior Olivia Liuson led the Hornets with a time of 18:05.38 in the three-mile race. Her time put her in second place. Her teammate, sophomore Katy Hosokawa, finished in sixth place with a time of 19:06.87. Just six one-hundredths of a second behind Hosokawa was AHS freshman Sophia Carpenter at 19:06.93. She came in seventh. Hornet senior Geraldine Yue finished in ninth place with a time of 19:09.34. AHS sophomore Madison Tiaffay rounded out the Hornets’ top five with a time of 19:41.43 for 18th place.

AHS finished with a final score of 42 points. Piedmont High School (PHS) finished second with 48 points — lowest point score wins. PHS senior Sophia Zalewski was the overall individual winner with a time of 17:50.64. She finished the course almost 15 seconds before Liuson. Zalewski’s teammate, sophomore Ellie Black, finished eighth with a time of 19:07.47. Zalewski and Black were the only top-10 finishers for the Highlanders, while the Hornets had four.

The Encinal High School (EHS) cross country team finished seventh in the competition. EHS senior Gabby Cassaro finished 35th overall with a time of 20:57.52. Her teammate, sophomore Malou Killian, finished right behind her in 36th place with a time of 20:57.96. Tessa Vasquez finished 39th (21:30.87), Melody Ma finished 46th (22:44.30) and Sarina Given finished 54th (24:21.68) to round out the Jets’ top five.

Men’s Competition
The AHS men’s team finished fourth out of 11 teams. Three Hornets finished in the top seven out of 74 participants. Junior Emilio Cazares came in third place with a time of 15:46.06 in the three-mile race. Senior Ian Pang came in sixth place at 16:22.23, while fellow senior Patrick Nguyen finished in seventh place at 16:25.17 for the Hornets. 

Alameda also received big contributions from senior Benjamin Ting who came in 29th place with a time of 17:09.70 and senior Jordan Lim finished 35th with a time of 17:13.71.

The EHS men’s team finished eighth in the same race. The Jets were led by sophomore Ben Wilson-Ripsom who finished 13th at 16:38.84. Sophomore Davis Oduor (17:13.65) finished 34th, junior Gabe Jones (17:14.05) finished 37th, senior Zander Lack (17:41.88) came in 48th place and freshman Diego Cerna (17:46.45) finished 49th. 

All four teams will compete at the North Coast Section Cross Country Championship on Nov. 23.
