Wrestling Takes Hold at Alameda Point

Mike Lano Female wrestlers compete in Saturday’s event.

Stars of Wrestling International Promotion returned to Alameda Point Gym for its annual show Saturday.

The packed card was capped by TNA wrestling world champion and mixed martial arts superstar Bobby Lashley, second-generation star Carlito and The Boogeyman. All three have been champions in World Wrestling Entertainment.

The main event featured Jody “War Pig” Kristofferson who in real life is the son of music and acting legend Kris Kristofferson. Kris usually flies in from Maui to watch Jody’s matches.

A women’s match, presumably a first in Alameda history, was one of many highlights Saturday for the Goldrush Women’s World Championship.

Fans were left mesmerized by the athletic exploits of the performers. One fan was heard saying “this was the best one they’ve ever had.”

Lead promoter Robert “Icebox” Smith is both a roller derby legend with the Bay Bombers and a former wrestler. Icebox rode in the Bay Bombers’ Roller Derby float during Monday’s July Fourth parade.

Pro wrestling, a uniquely-American blend of sports and theatrics; had some history here dating back to Lou Thesz’ world championship bouts at the classic Neptune Gardens amusement park.
