Women Golfers Play On
While most of the country is saddled with snow during the winter, the Bay Area is experiencing weather beautiful enough to play a few rounds of golf. That is exactly what the Alameda Women’s Golf Club (AWGC) did last Thursday, Jan. 9 on the Earl Fry Golf Course.
Juanita Solano and Sherry Westernoff tied to win the tournament by shooting matching net 68s. Solano and Westernoff competed in the second flight — handicap of 23 to 27. Claire Loud finished in third place with a net 71. Stephanie Bellato won the first flight competition — handicap of nine to 22. Belatto shot a net 69, three strokes better than Nora Solmoro’s net 72. Tai Chewpanich shot a net 73 for third place. Margot Gibson shot a net 70 to win the third flight bracket — handicap of 28 to 31. Wilda Moore was two strokes behind her at net 72 for second place. Betty Hatch and Bonnie Kim tied for third place with a pair of 75s.
Irene Park won the fourth flight — handicap of 32 to 40 — with a net 72.
Pam Curtis came in second place (net 74), Connie Wendling ranked third (net 75) and Bev Blatt (net 82) rounded out the top four. Bellato shot the lowest gross of the event with an overall 80.
Chewpanich won the closet-to-the-hole competition on the 15th hole by placing her ball 9’ 5” from the pin. Jackie Suh was second (11’ 7”) and Solano (13’ 1”) rounded out the top three. Twenty-nine golfers participated in the event.
