Women’s Soccer Teams Kick Off First Round of Soccer Playoffs

Both Alameda High School (AHS) and Encinal High School (EHS) women’s soccer teams qualified for the North Coast Section (NCS) playoffs.

The Hornets (8-2-4) are the sixth seed in the 16-team NCS Div. II women’s soccer playoff. The Hornets easily beat Concord High, 3-0, in the first round last Tuesday, Feb. 15, at home. They scored two goals in the first half and a goal in the second.

The game was played at Estuary Park. AHS will advance to play Campolindo High of Moraga in the quarterfinal round Friday, Feb. 18. Campolindo is the three-seed in the tournament. The Hornets will be the road team.

The Hornets went 7-2-3 in the West Alameda County Conference (WACC) – Foothill League. They finished second, out of seven teams, only behind Berkeley High. The Hornets won their last four matches of the regular season including a 1-0 victory over Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland on Feb. 4, at home on Senior Night.

The Jets (11-2-2) are the ninth seed in the 15-team NCS Div. III women’s soccer tournament. EHS faced West County High of Sebastopol last Tuesday, on their home turf in the first round. The Jets beat West County by winning a shootout, 3-1. The match was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and overtime. EHS advances to play the one-seed Branson High of Ross in the second round on Saturday, Feb. 19. Branson was awarded a bye in the first round.

The Jets went a perfect 10-0 in the five-team WACC Shoreline League. The Jets have not lost a league match in two seasons. Last year they went 8-0 in league matches.

The St. Joseph Notre Dame women’s team did not qualify for the postseason. They finished their season with a 4-9-1 overall record.

Men’s Soccer
None of the Alameda high school men’s soccer teams qualified for any NCS tournaments.

AHS (9-8-3) was able to end its season on a positive note. After losing three straight matches, the Hornets were able to defeat Hayward High School, 2-0, on Feb. 11, in the season finale, which was also the team’s Senior Night. The team finished sixth in the 12-team WACC Foothill League with a 7-6-3 record.

EHS ended its season with a 1-10-1 overall record. They only played league matches this season. They finished 11th in the Foothill League.
The SJND men’s team played its season last fall.
