Winter Sports Regular Season Concludes

Winter Sports Regular Season Concludes

The high school winter sports regular season ended last week for men’s and women’s soccer and basketball teams.

Men’s Basketball
The Alameda High School (AHS) men’s basketball team (20-6) had an outstanding season on the hardwood this season. The Hornets went 8-4 in the West Alameda County Conference (WACC) Foothill League, good for third place. AHS was a combined 4-0 against Encinal High School (EHS) and St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND). The Hornets are seeded seventh out of 16 teams in the North Coast Section (NCS) Div. II basketball playoffs. They will face Ukiah High School (24-4) in the first round Wednesday, Feb. 15 on the road.

The EHS men’s basketball team (10-15) finished the season on a three-game winning streak. The team went 6-4 in the WACC Shoreline League, which put them in fourth place out of six teams in the league. The Jets are the 14th seed in the NCS Div. III playoffs. They will face Piner High of Santa Rosa in the first round Tuesday, Feb. 14, on the road.

The SJND men’s basketball team (5-20) went 0-13 in the Foothill League. The Pilots had a promising start to the season winning the first two games of the year including a 53-49 victory over rival Encinal on Dec. 2, 2022. Despite the recovered, the Pilots qualified for the NCS Div. IV basketball tournament as the 13th seed out of 13 teams. They will Marin Catholic of Kentfield on Wednesday, Feb. 15, on the road.

Women’s Basketball
The AHS women’s basketball team (18-8) finished fourth in the Foothill League with a 5-5 recorded. The Hornets went 2-0 against the Jets this season. The team is the fifth seed out of 13 teams in the NCS Div. II women’s basketball tournament. AHS will face Deer Valley High of Antioch in the first round Feb. 14, at home.

The EHS women’s basketball team (11-8) finished the season winning eight of its last nine games including two victories over SJND. The Jets went 8-1 in the Shoreline League, putting them in second place out of six teams, one spot behind Hayward High School (9-1). The Jets will face Sonoma Valley in the first round of the NCS Div. III playoffs on Feb. 14, at home.

The SJND women’s basketball team (9-11) did not qualify for a postseason tournament. The Pilots season ends with a 3-7 record in the Shoreline League.

Men’s Soccer
The AHS men’s soccer team (10-9-2) team won its final three games of the season to finish the season with a winning record. They also beat rival EHS twice this year. The team will face Richmond High School in the first round of the NCS Div. II men’s soccer tournament.

The EHS men’s soccer team (3-11-2) only played games against other Foothill League opponents, including AHS. The team did not qualify for the postseason.

Women’s Soccer
The AHS women’s soccer team (4-5-4) did not qualify for the postseason, but they did post a 1-0-1 record in its two matches against EHS.

The EHS women’s soccer team (7-4-6) qualified for the NCS Div. III women’s soccer tournament as the fifth seed out of 16 teams. They will take on 12-seed El Cerrito High School at home on Feb. 14. They finished with a 3-4-5 record in the Foothill League.

The SJND women’s soccer team (5-10) ended the regular season with a 5-9 record in the Bay Counties – East League. The Pilots did not qualify for a postseason tournament.
