Winter Sports in Postseason
The high school sports playoffs in both basketball and soccer kicked off this week. Alameda high schools are well represented in both sports.
The Alameda High School (AHS) women’s basketball team earned the seventh seed in the 16-team North Coast Section (NCS) Div. II women’s basketball playoffs. The Hornets went 15-11 overall and 4-6 in the West Alameda County Conference (WACC) Foothill League. AHS played Tamalpais High of Mill Valley in the first round at press time Tuesday, Feb. 12.
The Encinal High School (EHS) women’s basketball team was given the eighth seed in the NCS Div. III women’s basketball playoffs. The Jets are 13-9 overall and 6-2 in the WACC Shoreline League. The team finished second in the league. EHS took on San Marin of Novato High at press time last Tuesday in the opening round. The winner will play one-seed Salesian College Prep of Richmond tomorrow.
The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) women’s basketball team is the third seed in the 15-team NCS Div. III playoffs. The Pilots went 19-6 overall and 6-0 in the Bay Counties East League. SJND took on Pinole Valley High last Tuesday. The Pilots entered the postseason on a four-game winning streak and have won six of the last seven contests.
The AHS men’s basketball team entered the 16-team NCS Div. II men’s basketball tournament as the 12th seed. The Hornets went 16-10 overall this season including 7-3 in the WACC Shoreline League. AHS took on San Lorenzo High in the opening round last Tuesday at press time. Last season the Hornets lost in the semifinals of the NCS playoffs, but won the NorCal regional tournament.
The EHS men’s basketball team went 8-16 overall on the season, including 1-8 in the WACC Foothill League, but still qualified for the NCS Div. III men’s basketball playoffs. The Hornets were given the 13th seed in the 16-team tournament. The team took on Albany High yesterday in the first round. The Jets also made the playoffs last year with an under .500 record.
The SJND men’s basketball team was seeded fifth in the NCS Div. III playoffs. The 17-6 Pilots took on Alhambra High of Martinez last Tuesday. If SJND and EHS win their opening-round matches they will face off tomorrow. The Alameda Sun went to press after the first round games. The Pilots are currently on a 10-game winning streak entering the playoffs.
The AHS women’s soccer team barely squeaked into the NCS Div. II women’s soccer playoffs as the 16 seed in the 16-team tournament. The Hornets went 9-7-3 overall and 7-4-3 in the Shoreline League. AHS took on the first-seed Livermore High in the first round yesterday. The Hornets lost to Arroyo High of San Lorenzo 3-2 in the Shoreline League playoffs on Feb. 9.
The EHS women’s soccer team qualified for the NCS Div. III women’s soccer playoffs as the 11th seed in the 13-team tournament. The team went 6-10-2 overall and 5-3-2 in the Shoreline League. The Jets faced Acalanes High of Pleasant Hill yesterday in the first round. The Jets lost to the Hornets 1-0 in the Shoreline tournament semifinal on Feb. 7.
The SJND women’s soccer team was also given the 11th seed, but in the Div. IV women’s soccer playoff. The Pilots went 9-4-3 overall and 5-3-3 in the Bay Counties League. The team took on Urban of San Francisco in the first round yesterday. The Pilots did not qualify for the playoffs last year after going 3-10-1 overall and 0-9-1 in league games.
The AHS men’s soccer team is the 10th seed in the 16-team NCS Div. II men’s soccer tournament. The Hornets went 10-6-2 overall and 7-4-2 in the Shoreline League. The team took on Concord High in the first round after press time yesterday.
The EHS men’s soccer team failed to qualify for the postseason after a 2-15 season and 2-10 in the Shoreline League. The SJND men’s soccer team played its season in the fall. They went 6-7-1 overall.
