Welcome to the City Hall Permit Center

City of Alameda    The public can receive assistance from the permit center Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in City Hall.

City Hall has department just to streamline permitting

The Permit Center at City Hall is the central location for obtaining building, fire, planning, public works and special events permits. The friendly center staff is ready to assist residents throughout the permitting process from initial questions and preapplication meetings to inspections and final certificate of occupancy.

A consultation with the Planning Division should be the first step in the permitting process. Who would visit this permit center? Here are some examples:

  • A new business owner learns that she needs a zoning clearance before she can open shop.
  • A homeowner wants to make some changes on the exterior of his home. He finds out before he can proceed, he needs a design review before he can make those changes.
  • A business owner discovers that before she can display that handsome new sign she designed, she needs a sign permit. She also learns that the first stop should have been to the Permit Center before having that sign designed.
  • A homeowner, who decided to make some extra money with a home-based business, discovers she needs a home-occupation permit.

Special permits include those for block parties, charitable solicitations, no-parking signs for construction, moving vans or pods and street closures.

The Permit Center is open Monday to Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The center is closed Fridays.
