Volleyball Season Heating Up

The Alameda High School (AHS) women’s volleyball team had its eight-game winning streak snapped after a 3-0 loss to Bishop O’Dowd on Sept. 23.

The Hornets lost the three-set league match 25-22, 25-19, 25-19. The Hornets and Dragons both compete in the West Alameda County Conference (WACC) Foothill League.

Before the loss, the Hornets reeled off huge wins including against Encinal High School (EHS) and St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND). First, AHS defeated Irvington High of Fremont, 2-0 (25-18, 25-13), to finish 2-2 in a preseason tournament on Aug. 28. They narrowly escaped with a victory in their 3-2 win against Washington High of Fremont on Aug. 31.

The Hornets began September with a 3-2 (20-25, 27-25, 20-25, 25-23, 16-14) victory over St. Mary’s High of Albany and a 3-1 (18-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-11) win against Albany High School.

AHS followed that up with shutout victories against Skyline High of Oakland on Sept. 9 and the Pilots on Sept. 15. The Hornets defeated the Jets, 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 19-25, 25-23) on Sept. 16. The Hornets’ last win of the eight-game streak came in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-9, 25-15) shutout over Berkeley High on Sept. 21.

The Hornets took on San Leandro High School on Tuesday and will face Piedmont High School Thursday, Sept. 30. AHS is 12-3 overall on the season and 1-1 in the Foothill League.

Encinal & St. Joseph Notre Dame

EHS is 6-7 overall and 2-0 in the WACC Shoreline league. They will take on Hayward High School on Sept. 30.

SJND is 8-2 on the season and 8-0 in the Bay Counties – East League. The Pilots have won four of its last five contests. They will face College Prep of Oakland on Sept. 30.
