Valor Games Slated to Begin June 2 on Coast Guard Island
The fifth Annual Valor Games Far West will return to Coast Guard Island from Friday, June 2 to Monday, June 5.
The event brings together disabled veterans and active duty service members for three days of Paralympic sport competitions. This year’s Valor Games features more than 100 athletes competing in more than 10 events. New and returning athletes representing all military branches will participate again this year.
The opening ceremony and sports clinics will take place Friday, June 2. Powerlifting, rowing and archery competitions will be held on June 3. Cycling, biathlon, paratriathlon and swimming events will be held on June 4. The final day will have field events and the closing ceremony on June 5.
The Valor Games event is a partnership between the U.S. Coast Guard and the Northern California Regional Paralympic Sport Program. The goal of the competition is to introduce spectators to adapted sports with the hopes of promoting ongoing adapted sport participation in the community.
Athletes will be provided meals and lodging for free, thanks to funding from the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. The Valor Games also received funding from sponsors including Ability Center of Sacramento, Bank of the West, Dignity Memorial, Dome Construction, the Elks, Fremont Police Department, Hewlett Packard Enterprises, IBEW, NECA, Navy League, Kaiser Permanente and USAA Insurance among many others.
