Valentine’s Day is Special for Dave and Joyce

Dave and Joyce Denyven will celebrate 74 years of marriage on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14.

At a recent Alameda Kiwanis meeting, they marked their devotion to each other over many decades. Dave joked that he wanted to get married on Feb. 29th, 1948, but Joyce held out for a yearly celebration on Valentine’s Day.

Dave is a World War II veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his service. He joined the Alameda Kiwanis Club on April 1, 1953, when Joyce was teaching at Berkeley High School. The years flew by and now they are 96 and 94 years young. Dave still goes grocery shopping on his recumbent bicycle, their transportation these days.

Kiwanis is hoping that Dave and Joyce will attend the 100th anniversary of the Alameda club next year, in 2023.
