Track Stars Shine in Meet
Encinal junior Shelby Nelson finished ninth in the men’s and women’s 3,200-meter race at the San Leandro Invitational track meet on March 17 at Burrell Field.
Both men and women faced off in the 3,200-meter race at the event. Nelson finished with a time of 11:26.97. James Logan High of Union City sophomore Joseph Moran won the meet with a time of 10:35.11. The top eight finishers were all male. Nelson was the first woman to cross the finish line. Balboa High of San Francisco’s Hailey Bucholz was the second woman to cross the finish line with a time of 12:37.56.
Nelson won the women’s 1,600-meter race. She finished with a time of 5:22.41. James Logan senior Vanessa Mejia came in second with a time of 5:47.30. De Anza High of El Sobrante junior Madison Hensley rounded out the top three with a time of 5:48.99. Eighteen competitors participated in the race.
Encinal sophomore Gabby Cassaro finished in fifth place in the women’s 800-meter event. She finished with a time of 2:33.80. Her time was a little more than two seconds off the lead. Hensley won the race with a time of 2:31.42.
Encinal freshman Gabriel Jones came in fifth place in the men’s 1,600-meter race. Jones finished with a time of 5:08.86. He was the only freshman in the race out of 25 participants. Sophomore Yavinder Grewal of James Logan won the race with a time of 4:47.86.
