Track Star Wins 100-Meter Dash
Alameda High School (AHS) student-athlete Ramir Smith won the men’s 100-meter dash competition at the Granada Distance and Sprint Festival Saturday, April 14, at Granada High in Livermore.
Smith, a senior, posted a time of 10.94 in the sprint. Junior Akil Riley of Oakland Tech came in second place at 11.08. Senior Danny Maguire of Monte Vista High in Danville placed third with a time of 11.19. His teammate Elijah Sheppard came in fourth place with a time of 11.20. Senior Trokon Johnson of James Logan in Union City rounded out the top five with a time of 11.25.
Smith’s AHS teammate, junior Kaleb Vance, finished in 20th place with a time of 11.78. St. Joseph Notre Dame High School (SJND) sophomore Zavier Annis placed in the top 10 with a time of 11.47, good for ninth place. More than 100 athletes took part in the meet.
Smith also finished in third place in the 400-meter competition. He finished the race with a time of 51.40. Sheppard won the race with a time of 50.54. His teammate Leland Walton finished 29th out of the 71 athletes that competed. The senior finished the race with a time of 55.06.
AHS freshman Yimmie Dao finished 16th in the women’s 400-meter race with a time of 1:05.11. Seventy people competed in the race.
AHS junior Katherine Gee finished fourth in the women’s 800-meter race. She completed the trek with a time of 2:22.79. SJND teammates Taylor Viera and Danielle Perez placed 25th and 28th, respectively. Viera, a sophomore, finished with a time of 2:43.88, while Perez, also a sophomore, finished with a time of 2:46.86. Fifty-five athletes competed in the race.
AHS junior Lauren Lum finished second in the women’s 1,600 meter race. She finished with a time of 5:04.21. She finished behind only Colleen McCandless from Granada High in Livermore. Lum’s time gave her a new personal record in the 1,600 meters. Her previous personal record was 5:04.78 at last year’s North Coast Section final.
AHS senior Matthew Yep placed seventh in the men’s 1,600-meter race. He completed the race with a time of 4:34.15. More than 160 athletes competed in the race. Hornet senior Cedric Murphy finished 25th with a time of 4:47.85.
AHS senior Devin Rowe finished 24th out of 57 competitors, in the men’s 3,200-meter race. He completed the trek with a time of 10:40.88.
