Track Star Leaves Others Behind
Encinal High School (EHS) senior Shelby Nelson won the women’s varsity 1,600-meter race at the San Leandro Invitational Saturday, March 16, at Burell Field.
Nelson completed the race with a time of 5:27.69. She won the competition with relative ease as the next participant to finish came in with a time of 5:44, nearly 17 seconds behind Nelson. That time belonged to San Leandro High sophomore Ariana Chavez. Arroyo High of San Lorenzo senior Netzali Can rounded out the top three with a time of 5:50.17. Eleven runners competed in the race.
EHS junior Gabby Cassaro finished second in the women’s 800-meter race. She finished with a time of 2:30.99. Sarah Le from Washington High in Fremont won the race with a time of 2:29.67. EHS freshman Tatiana Rebanal finished seventh with a time of 2:54.16. Fourteen athletes competed in the race.
St. Joseph Notre Dame junior Zavier Annis finished eighth in the 100-meter dash competition. Annis completed the race with a time of 11.41. EHS senior Jalen Hercules finished the race with a time of 11.59 for 13th place. EHS sophomore Augustine Tautalatasi finished in 15th place with a time of 11.64. EHS senior Aloyouis Bruce finished with a time of 11.96 for 27th place. Fifty-six runners competed in the race.
Annis also finished seventh in the 200-meter race. He completed the race with a time of 23.21. Hercules finished ninth with a time of 23.44. Bruce came in 21st place with a time of 24.73. EHS senior Tyrone Mitchell finished 23rd with a time of 24.86. Thirty-eight competitors participated in the race.
The EHS relay team of Max Ponsaa, Bruce, Hercules and Mitchell finished fifth in the four-by-100-meter relay with an overall time of 44.84. San Leandro High won the race with a time of 42.90. Thirteen relay teams competed in the race.
