TJ Maxx Closes After Knife Scare

On Wednesday, June 21, the TJ Maxx store at South Shore Center was closed after a man suspiciously holding two knifes refused to leave.

At 10:50 a.m., Alameda Police Department (APD) dispatch received a call from the manager of the TJ Maxx who indicated there was a person inside who retrieved two knives from the store's shelves and was walking around. The man then proceeded to walk behind the counter and refused to leave, according to APD Lt. Alan Kuboyama,.

"The manager suspected the person was experiencing a mental crisis," said Kuboyama.

Before APD officers arrived, the store was evacuated and closed. Officers arrived shortly after.

"We had four officers respond," said Kuboyama. "We also requested the help of the C.A.R.E. (Community Assessment Response & Engagement) Team. Once our officers arrived, they contacted the person inside of the store. The person had with him two approximately four-inch steak knives that he took from one of the shelves. He never used the knives to threaten anyone. Our officers determined he needed to be evaluated by a mental health professional. He was not arrested nor did he resist any of our attempts to talk to him. He caused no property damage to the store."

No injuries were reported. APD did not release the name of the man. The TJ Maxx remained closed after the officers left.

The TJ Maxx store is located at 2250 South Shore Center.
