Three AUSD Elementary Schools Receive “Distinguished School” Designations

Three Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) elementary schools were named 2023 “Distinguished Schools” award recipients by the California Department of Education (CDE). Earhart Elementary, Otis Elementary, and Bay Farm Elementary schools were announced as three of just 356 elementary schools from across the state of California to receive the award this year.

“I’d like to congratulate the students, staff, and families at all three schools for this distinction,” said AUSD Superintendent Pasquale Scuderi. “Given the many challenges posed in the last three years, these designations are both impressive and exemplary.”

To select the 2023 California Distinguished Schools, the CDE uses multiple measures to identify eligible schools based on their performance on indicators in the California School Dashboard, including assessment results, chronic absenteeism, suspension rates, and socioeconomic data.

Schools can qualify in one of two categories: closing the achievement gap and achieving exceptional student performance. Information regarding the 2022 Dashboard is provided on the CDE California School Dashboard and System of Support web page.

“[These schools’] innovation and hard work have helped to ensure their students can heal, recover, and thrive — even in the toughest times,” State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond said in a January 6 press release. “California Distinguished Schools represent examples of not just excellent teaching, learning, and collaboration, but also highly successful, data-driven school efforts ranging from professional development for educators to mental health and social-emotional wellness strategies to address the needs of students and families.”

Elementary schools and middle and high schools are recognized in alternate years; therefore, awardees hold the title for two years.
Every year, two California Distinguished Schools are also eligible to be recognized as a National Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Distinguished Schools awardee.

The award program returned this year after the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily suspended reporting of state and local student data.

Since its inception in 1985, the California Distinguished Schools Award remains an important way to celebrate exceptional schools, districts, teachers, and classified employees for their innovation, talent, and success in supporting students.

The California School Recognition Program Awards Ceremony will take place on Feb. 16. Time and location of the event is to be determined.
