Teare Races in Event Overseas
Alameda native Cooper Teare represented the USA Track & Field (USATF) team at the International Association of Athletics Federation Under-20 Track-and-Field World Championships in Tampere, Finland, from July 10 to 15.
The St. Joseph Notre Dame alum competed in the men’s 1,500- and 5,000-meter races. Teare finished in 10th place, out of 12 runners, in the 1,500-meter race on July 12. He finished with a time of 3:46.18. George Manangoi of Kenya won the race with a time of 3:41.71. Jakob Ingebrigsten of Norway came in second with a time 3:41.89. Justus Soget, also of Kenya, rounded out the top three with a time of 3:42.14.
Teare came in 10th place in the 5,000-meter race on July 14, out of 22 participants. The California high school state champion finished the race with a time of 14:24.30. A pair of Kenyans were atop the leaderboard. Edward Pinuga won the race with a time of 13:20.16. Stanley Mburu was behind him with a time of 13:20.57. Ingebrigsten was third in 13:20.78.
The competitions took place at Ratina Stadium. The race features the top junior athletes in the world.
Teare qualified after placing second in the 1,500- and 5,000-meter races at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships in Bloomington, Ind., on June 15 to 17.
