Teare Closes in on American Record

Cooper Teare came within a half second of setting the record for fastest mile run by an American in an indoor event at the Badgers Windy City Invite Friday, Feb. 11 in Chicago.

Teare, a 2017 St. Joseph Notre Dame grad, won the men’s one-mile race beating four other participants. Teare completed the race in 3:50.17. It was his personal best for an indoor mile race. He was able to hold off his Nike Running teammate Cole Hocker, who finished second with a time of 3:50.35. Michigan State track-and-field athlete Morgan Beadlescomb finished third with a time of 3:52.03. Two other participants did not finish the race.

Bernard Lagat, 47, holds the record for best time for an indoor mile by an American sprinter at 3:49.89. He set the mark in 2008 at an event in Boston. Lagat was in attendance Friday night and watched as Teare came close to breaking his record. The fastest indoor mile time on record is 3:47.01 by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha in 2019.

The event was held at the Track & Field Center at Gately Park in Chicago. Multiple competitions took place during the two-day event. The event was hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
