Teams Vie for Title in Basketball League

Several Alameda high schools were notified of their seedings in the North Coast Section (NCS) basketball playoffs last Sunday, Feb. 22. The tournaments began this week.

The Encinal men’s basketball team sports an 18-11 overall record throughout the year so far. They were given the sixth seed — out of 14 teams — in the NCS Division III playoffs after winning their league title. The Jets took down San Lorenzo 74-68 in the West Alameda County Conference (WACC) Championship last Saturday, Feb. 21. 

The Jets beat Hayward 72-43 on Tuesday, Feb. 17, in the first round and Mt. Eden of Hayward 64-56 on Thursday, Feb. 19, in the semifinal round.

Encinal played Piner of Santa Rosa in the first round of the NCS Division III playoffs on Tuesday, Feb. 24. The winner takes on the winner of Sonoma Valley and Drake of San Anselmo.

The Encinal women’s team finished 16-12 overall earning them the 11th seed — out of 16 teams — in the NCS Division III tournament. The Jets lost to Mt. Eden 54-35 in the WACC semifinal on Thursday, Feb. 19. The Jets took on Sonoma Valley yesterday in the first round. The winner takes on the winner of San Rafael and Acalanes of Lafayette.

The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) men’s team ended their season with a 14-14 overall record. The team lost 72-61 to El Cerrito in the Tri-County Athletic League (TCAL) playoffs last Tuesday, Feb. 17. 

The team will look to defend its 2014 NCS Division V crown as a three seed — out of 16 teams. The Pilots faced Sonoma Academy of Santa Rosa yesterday in the first round of the NCS playoffs. They will play the winner Head Royce of Oakland and St. Vincent de Paul of Petaluma.

The SJND women’s team put together a 17-11 overall record this year. They made it to the TCAL semifinals, but lost to Salesian of Richmond 80-40 last Saturday, Feb. 17.

    
The Pilots opened up their NCS Division V run against Bentley of Lafayette yesterday. The winner will face the winner of The Bay School of San Francisco and Upper Lake.

The Alameda women’s basketball team finished its 2015 regular season 13-13 overall. The team was given the sixth seed — out of 16 teams — in the NCS Division II playoffs. The Hornets will take on Casa Grande of Petaluma in the first round on Tuesday, Feb. 24. The winner will play the winner of Windsor and Mt. Eden. 

The Alameda High men’s team did not qualify for the NCS playoffs.
