The USA West Region International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Hopes camp and tournament was held at the Alameda Table Tennis Center (ATTC) at 2050 Lincoln Ave. the weekend of April 10 through 12.

Eleven boys and six girls participated in the Hopes Camp. Participants came from more than half a dozen different West Coast clubs. The camp included fitness and agility drills, such as consistency drills, foot work drills, service and service return, attack after service, multi-ball and match play for tournament preparation. Coaches Pieke Franssen, Avishy Schmidt, Jackie Lee, Jonathan Nielsen and Dave Hanson coached the three, three-hour sessions.

The tournament, played on Sunday, April 12, had a full draw of 12 boys and nine girls.

The boys’ event had two groups of six, with Sahil Puri, Shawn Fong, Kai Zarehbin and Sharv Utpat advancing to the championship bracket. The girls’ event had one group of five and one group of four with Tina Chen, Ava Fu, Saanvi Srivastava and Charlotte He advancing to the championship bracket.

The girls’ final featured ATTC’s Chen and Silicon Valley Table Tennis Club’s Fu in an exciting match with big momentum shifts. Fu overcame five game points from Chen to win 14-12 in the first game. Chen then took the next two games 11-8 and 11-4. Chen was on fire and leading 6-0 in game four, when Fu came alive and won the next six points. However, Chen closed the match out 11-9 in game four.

Chen will now advance to the ITTF North America Continental Championship tournament in Toronto in May.

In the boys final, top seed Sahil Puri from India Community Center edged Table Tennis of Albany’s Shawn Fong 3-1 (12-10, 9-11, 12-10, 11-8).
