Sweeney Park Updates
New park design approved
Last Thursday the Alameda Recreation & Parks Commission approved the final design of the Jean Sweeney Open Space Park. The design, developed by Placeworks, was created from the master plan approved by input of the citizens of Alameda and covers the entire park property even though the park will be constructed in at least three phases. Construction is scheduled to begin this fall.
Surveys of the former Belt Line switching yard have confirmed that the area is not 22 acres in size, but is actually 27 acres.
The final step for approval of the park is a presentation of the design to the City Council on Tuesday, July 5.
Jim Sweeney is Grand Marshal
The idea of an open space park in Alameda has been 18 years in the making. Jean Sweeney had a vision in 1998 of such a park and the design is everything she imagined. In 2016 we will begin to bring her idea to life.
In honor of this tremendous endeavor, Jim Sweeney, Jean’s husband, will be the Grand Marshal of the Alameda 4th of July Parade.
