Suspect Dies in Police Custody

At 10:45 a.m., last Monday, the Alameda Police Department (APD) responded to two reports of a man who was acting as though he was under the influence of a controlled substance.
The reports also alerted police that Mario Arenales Gonzalez, 26, from Oakland, was suspected of being involved in a theft.

At 1:08 p.m. Monday, APD tweeted that its officers were on the scene of a death investigation on Otis Drive and Park Street.

“We are asking the public to keep the area clear while detectives work,” APD’s Tweet read. The Tweet informed the public that APD had no further information to release.

Then, at 8 p.m., Monday, APD issued a press release. According to this release, officers found the man in the 800 block of Park Street, one block south of Otis Drive.

APD stated in this release that when the officers attempted to detain the man, a physical altercation ensued.

“At that time the man had a medical emergency,” the release stated. Officers began lifesaving measures and called paramedics to the scene. They transported the man to a local hospital, where he died.

APD stated in the press release that it has “asked the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the incident. The District Attorney’s office is conducting its own investigation, the press release stated.
