Ship carried passengers, crew ill with coronavirus
The cruise ship Grand Princess — carrying some 3,500 people from 54 countries with at least two passengers and 19 crew members suffering from the coronavirus disease — docked at Pier 22 at the Port of Oakland just before noon on Monday. The passengers included several Alameda residents. The isolated pier is not on the Oakland Estuary.
The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) women’s basketball team were crowned the inaugural North Coast Section (NCS) Open Division champions after defeating Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa, 67-58, Friday, Feb. 28.
Poll workers hustle to service two polling places combined at First Congregational Church Tuesday. The primary election featured chosing a Democratic candidate for president and state, county and local efforts to help fund schools. Several voters found out Monday their mail-in ballot choice for president wouldn’t count if their candidates dropped out. Tom Steyer, Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar bowed out after the Feb. 29 South Carolina primary, throwing their support behind Joe Biden. Bernie Sanders led going into Super Tuesday that saw 13 other states vote along with California.
After the original St. Joseph Basilica of the 1870s burned, the current facility replaced it in 1920. This year then marks the 100th anniversary of the present-day basilica at 1109 Chestnut St. As part of its centennial celebration, the basilica hosted a tour led by art historian Dr. Frank DeStefano of Connecticut. DeStefano conducted an informal walking tour of its historic stained-glass windows last Sunday.
Real estate development and acquisition company Wood Partners announced last December that it would soon break ground for Alta Buena Vista, a 372-unit luxury mixed-use project at 1501 Buena Vista Ave., the site of the long-closed Del Monte Warehouse (“Del Monte Project Rebooted,” Dec. 17, 2019). The developers have made good on their word and work is underway.
