Student Journalists Attend National High School Journalism Conference

Encinal High School (EHS) English teacher Joshua Linville and two of his students Isa Anderson and Gabby Benaquista attended the Spring National High School Journalism Convention from April 7 to 9 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles.

The conference, co-hosted by the Journalism Education Association (JEA) and the National Scholastic Press Association, brought together more than 2,000 students from across the nation. The conference included breakout sessions focused on writing, interviewing, design, photography and broadcasting.

“I really enjoyed the structure of the conference,” said Anderson, a junior. “It was mostly college style teaching, which was really nice to get a taste of while still in high school. It allowed us a lot of autonomy with our learning.”

The EHS students received an on-site critique of their 2022 EHS Horizon yearbook publication and submitted their 2021 publication for best in show. The editors were also able to begin brainstorming for next year’s publication.

“I learned most about how to become a team leader and how vital organization is in a classroom,” said Benaquista, a junior. “It’s an understatement to say I came out with a lot of new, exciting ideas.”

Guest speakers at the conference included acclaimed teenage journalist Hilde Lysiak to LA Times columnist Gustavo Arellano.

“What I enjoyed most about the conference was definitely hearing all the speakers and getting to interact with them,” said Benaquista. “I not only took away the content taught, but also how to speak on a professional level and ways to be engaging while presenting.”

The EHS students won a grant from JEA to attend the conference for free. Only two schools nationwide were awarded this grant.

The National High School Journalism Convention is a twice-yearly gathering of high school journalists and advisers.
