Student Creates Website to Raise Awareness on Hate Crimes Against Asian Americans
Kaleb Condez, a seventh grader at St. Philip Neri Catholic School (SPN), created a website for a school project for Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, to raise awareness of Asian hate crimes.
Condez’s website includes reports of hate crimes against the AAPI community, ways to take action and donate to special AAPI causes, and links to news articles.
The project started as a Genius Hour project. Genius Hour is an elective offered to SPN middle schoolers, where students are required to research a topic that interests them and present their findings to the class. Condez's initial goal was to raise awareness in his class, but after sharing it on social media and school newsletter, he believed it could create a huge impact on our local community and beyond.
“After learning the effects of these attacks on the victims and their family and friends, I was saddened and angered. These emotions motivated me to raise awareness and amplify the voices of AAPI,” said Condez. “I hope that viewing my website will raise awareness in our local community and further inform readers on the crimes that AAPI have experienced.”
AAPI Heritage Month was the month of May. To view Condez’s website, visit https://lebcondez.wixsite.com/my-site.
