Student Artwork Displayed Throughout the Island

A new batch of artwork from students as part of the Art Across the Island program is on display at different city locations.

Students found inspiration from books, famous artists, cultural inspirations, and even science to create artwork that is on display at Alameda public libraries, Books Inc., and Lilac Dress Boutique in Alameda. For example, an Edison Elementary School fourth grade class looked at scientific photos taken under a microscope and viewed work by contemporary artists who incorporate science, medicine and the microscopic world in their art. Taking inspiration from the shapes, patterns and colors observed, while keeping in mind composition, balance and ways of drawing with thread, these Edison students created their own microbe-inspired embroidery. The students’ artwork is being displayed at Bay Farm Island Library.

In addition to Edison's unique embroidery artwork, fifth graders at Love Elementary School created animal portraits that are being displayed at the Main Library, Maya Lin first graders created artworks using watercolors that are being displayed at the West End Library, and Wood Middle School students created mandalas that are being display at Books Inc. and Lilac Dress Boutique.

Art Across the Island is a program organized by the Alameda Education Foundation. More than 4,000 works of student art have been displayed since the program began in 2016.
