Street Closure Extended

Street Closure Extended

The road connecting Atlantic Avenue and Sherman Street between Buena Vista Avenue and Wind River Road will remain closed until Jan. 14, 2022, due to weather delays, according to a press release from the City of Alameda.

Due to inclement weather, the Del Monte contractor will require additional time to complete the improvements. The contractor is actively working to complete this phase of construction. Crews are working longer shifts and on Saturdays as necessary.

The street was supposed to reopen on Dec. 30 (“West End Road Closed for December,” Dec. 9). The streets first closed on Dec. 6. There will be no through traffic on Sherman Street, between Buena Vista Avenue and Wind River Road.

The road closure is to accommodate for construction around the historic Del Monte building. The construction includes building framing and Clement Street paving activities. The intersection at Atlantic Avenue and Sherman Street will be reconfigured to allow continues, including the Clement Avenue extension.

The road closure and detours will be in place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until Jan. 14. Message boards are installed with road closure and detour information. Trucks can use Grand and Lincoln instead of Grand, Encinal, Central and Webster.

There will be a detour for automobiles on Buena Vista Avenue. Pedestrians and bicyclists are asked to go around the eastern side of the Del Monte building along Entrance Road.

Intermittent lane closures will continue around the project to provide a safe working area. When possible, consider using an alternate route to alleviate traffic in the neighborhood.

Access to Jean Sweeney Open Space Park and the parking lot off Sherman will remain open.
