Stone Powers Hornets to League Golf Title
The Alameda High School (AHS) men’s golf team won the West Alameda County Conference (WACC) golf championship Monday, May 1, at the Metropolitan Golf Course in Oakland.
Eight teams competed in the championship competition. The Hornets sat atop the leaderboard at the event after posting an overall 394 team score. Castro Valley High School finished second with an overall 412 score and Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland came in third place with an overall 434. The Encinal High men’s golf team finished eighth with an overall 612 team score. The Jets were led by Adam Pearson who shot a 101.
AHS was buoyed by the performance of WACC Player of the Year Kailer Stone. Stone, just a freshman, shot a tournament-best six-under par 66 at the event. Hornet junior Will Rozien finished second on the team with a nine-over par 81. Matt Thornton and Neil Albelda finished tied for third on the team. Cyrus Jones rounded out the top five with a ten-over 83. Josh Howard posted an 85 — his score was not counted toward the Hornets’ team total.
The team’s WACC title completes a stellar season in league play for the Hornets. The team went undefeated in league play en route to a 19-2 overall record. Stone, Thornton, Rozien and Albelda each made the WACC All-League team.
Next, the Hornets will take part in the North Coast Section Division I championship tournament on May 15 at the Foxtail Golf Course in Rohnert Park. More than 20 teams will compete in the team competition.
