Part of shop’s mission is to take donated bikes, restore them

The Changing Gears Bicycle Shop is closing after 12 years in business in Alameda. The Island City staple located at Alameda Point will shut down services officially in April. 


The 46th Annual Elks Hoops Shoot Alameda City Finals wereheld Friday, Jan. 4, at the Alameda Point Gym.

The hoops shoot contests consist of a free throw shooting competition where each contestant has 25 opportunities to shoot a basketball into the hoop.

The contestants that participated in the city finals must live in Alameda or attend an Alameda school. The participants also had to qualify by winning the initial round tournament played at different parks in Alameda. The Hoops Shoot contest is broken into six divisions separated by age and gender.

Four members of the Alameda Gators swim team competed at the Winter 14-and-Under Short Course Junior Olympics Dec. 1 and 2 in Moraga.

Sydney Thompson saw the most success of the four athletes at the event. Thompson placed seventh out of 10 participants in the girls’ 12-and-under 50-yard breaststroke competition. Thompson finished the race with a time of 34.49. 


Midway through the winter basketball season, the St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) women’s basketball teams has stood out as the best team on the Island.

Alameda High School (AHS) alum Keelan Doss was named to the Associated Press (AP) NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) All-America second team for his 2018 season on the UC Davis football team.
