Tai Chewpanich was on fire at Alameda Women’s Golf Club (AWGC) tournament event last Thursday, Jan. 30. Chewpanich shot the lowest gross and net scores in the event and even sunk a 22’8" putt for a birdie on the 15th hole.
Chewpanich played in the first flight — handicap of 9 to 26 — where she shot a net 70 and an overall 79. Cheryl Saxton came in second place in the flight with a net 72. Yvonne Lee reached third place in the flight with a net 75. Sarah Valentine and Stephanie Bellato tied for fourth place. They both shot a net 76.
Finding teams to play sports with in Alameda is easier than most adults think. The Alameda Recreation and Park Department’s Adult Open Gym is held all year on Sundays from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Alameda Point Gym (1101 W. Red Line Ave.) For a fee of $6 per person, adults 18 and older may join volleyball and basketball games.

In our second part of showcasing the 2013-14 winter sports’ season for Alameda high school athletes, we will take a trip to the soccer fields. This season the women’s teams are experiencing much better results than their male counterparts.
The Alameda Rugby Islanders are ready to kick off its 2014 season on Feb. 8. The 2014 season will be the 11th year of the rugby club, which began in 2003.
The team and head coach Austin Britts have spent the entire month of January training for the upcoming season. The club held mini camps for the men’s under-19 squad on Saturday, Jan. 4 and Sunday, Jan. 5 at the soccer field near Alameda Point.
On Jan 12, the rugby club celebrated Alameda Recreation and Park Department’s decision to allow them to hold future practices at Tillman Park on Bay Farm Island.
The winter high schools sports’ season is in full swing and both men’s and women’s teams on the hardwood are putting together great seasons at the halfway point. Five of the six Alameda high school basketball teams have a winning records as of Tuesday, Jan. 21.
