The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) women’s softball team is tearing the through the North Coast Section Division V softball playoffs.

The Pilots entered the tournament as a five seed out of 13 teams. The Pilots defeated Urban of San Francisco 13-3 in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday, May 20. 

The Lady Pilots went 18 of 26 at the plate with freshman Gina Bonardi, sophomore Anekalia Crevani, freshman Lea Akima and infielder Eileen Rhatigan each totaling three hits. Rhatigan led the way with four RBIs.

Former Alameda High School sprinter (2010), Kellie Grigg, is the new 2014 NCAA Big West Conference Women’s 400 Meter Hurdle Champion. Grigg, a senior from the University of California at Davis, converted from sprints to hurdles just two years ago, and has steadily climbed the school’s hurdle rankings. Grigg (pictured at left) currently ranks fifth all-time in UC Davis’ 100-meter Hurdles and third all-time in the 400-meter hurdles. 

On Thursday, May 15, the Alameda Women’s Golf Club hosted the second round of the 84th Fry Brothers Memorial Match Play Tournament. This annual match honors the Fry brothers — Earl, Mark, Dick Fred and Tom — who donated the first trophy to the Alameda Women’s Golf Club in 1930, when all golf was “match play.”

Robby Jackson won Rookie of the Year for the U.S. Hockey League 2013-2014 season.

Alameda native Robby Jackson was named Rookie of the Year for the United States Hockey League (USHL) 2013-2014 season.

Jackson, 16, set the record for most goals in the USHL Tier 1 era (2002-present) for a 16-year-old with 28 goals. He also accumulated 14 assists giving him 42 points on the season. The season was not all roses for Jackson and his Chicago Steel team. The Steel lost its first 10 games of the season, starting with a 5-1 defeat to the Green Bay Gamblers on Sept. 12.
