Ralph Walker, head track coach for the Don Grant Youth Track Club, is training young men and women in the sport that he loves. “I’m hoping to find kids from Alameda to gear up for the Tommie Smith Youth Track Meet in May and the Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics in Reno, Nevada, in July,” he said.

The free training takes place every Tuesday and Friday at 4 p.m. on the track on the College of Alameda campus, 555 Ralph Appezzato Memorial Parkway. To learn more, call Walker at 776-7451 or email ralphwalker27@yahoo.com.

 

The Alameda Island Aquatics swim team sent 19 swimmers to compete at the Pacific Swimming’s Short Course Junior Olympics March 14-16 in Concord.

The swimmers participated in eight different competition age groups with 16 swimmers racing in each meet.

The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) men’s basketball team used a defensive shutdown in the second quarter to power its way to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Division V NorCal regional championship Saturday, March 22.

The Pilots downed Central Catholic of Modesto 54-42 in the regional final. The Pilots have now won the Division V regional final four years in a row. The victory also earns them a berth into the CIF Division V final tomorrow, March 28 where they will take on Renaissance Academy of La Canada, the Division V SoCal region champion.

Cheryl Saxton was the big winner at the Alameda Women’s Golf Club’s tournament event on March 20. Saxton blew away her competition with a net 66. Four players tied for second place overall, but they all shot net 71s.

Saxton competed in the first flight — handicap of 10 to 24. Barbara Mickle and Stephanie Bellato each shot a net 71 to tie for second place in the flight. Bernice Herzberg shot a net 74 for fourth place. Eleven people competed in this flight.
