Jenny Bae overcame a two-shot deficit and a two-hole playoff to earn the crown at the Alameda Women’s Golf Club’s 83rd Club Championship tournament last Thursday, Sept. 25 on the Earl Fry Course.

Golf Scholarship handed out

Glenn Van Winkle received the prestigious Jack Cark Scholarship award from the Alameda Junior Golf Club (AJGC) last month.

Van Winkle was chosen because of his work and dedication to the AJGC. He served as a junior advisor for the AJGC board ofdirectors and was instrumental in the fight that saved the Mif Albright par-3 course from developers.

Tai Chewpanich maintained her lead atop the 83rd annual Alameda Women’s Golf Club (AWGC) Club Championship after the second round, but Jenny Bae is closing in.

Bae shot the lowest gross score of the round — the lowest accumulative gross score will determine club championship over the three-round tournament — with an overall 80 after shooting an overall 87 last week. Chewpanich posted an overall 83 in round two after an overall 82 last week.

California Open Championship latest in series of medals for Kahuanui

Alameda native Kaniela Kahuanui won the gold medal in the adult advanced No Gi division at the renowned Brazilian Jiu-Jitzu tournament the Five Grappling California 2 Open Championship last Saturday, Sept. 20, at Long Beach Polytechnic High School.

Kahuanui, 20, competed in the adult middleweight division for participants between 18 and 29 years old who weigh between 170 and 189.9 pounds.

Lady golfers hold club tourney for 83rd straight year

The 83rd annual Alameda Women’s Golf Club (AWGC) Club Championship kicked off last Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Chuck Corica Golf Complex with 26 golfers participating in this year’s iteration.
